(Of course you do)Series 13 of BBC’s The Apprentice is is about to reaches its conclusion tonight as Lord Sugar runs out of contestants to fire. If you dream of becoming an apprentice star in 2018 then we have some good news. You can become an apprentice, and you can do it without making a complete t!t out of yourself on the telly. The BBC programme has somewhat blurred the understanding of what an ‘apprentice’ really is. Here’s the dictionary definition;“a person who is learning a trade from a skilled employer, having agreed to work for a fixed period”Nowhere in this definition does it reference cringe-worthy team names (e.g. “Synergy” or “tenacity”) or haggling with a butcher for an extra 10p of a pound of offal. In reality, apprenticeships are a great way to get a head start in the field you want to work in. Apprenticeships enable you to start working and earn a wage while you learn key skills and gain the qualifications that future employers want. Our little island is a great place to start an apprenticeship and we promise you that the level of ego you will encounter as you navigate the process will be somewhat smaller than that in Lord Sugar’s version.//embed.bannerflow.com/5a7afd48e314e03df8ca063b?responsive=on&nid=1&targeturl=The Isle of Man offers a variety of local Apprenticeship schemes that can open your mind to new and exciting career opportunities. There are a variety of apprentice courses available from Construction to ICT or Fishing to Health and Beauty.  So if you want to avoid being told: “you’re not a big fish in a small pond; you’re not even a fish!”. Have a think about what you have an interest in, grab your “field of ponies” and head on down to the IOM government for a chat about their apprentice scheme. It can be as simple as taking this one small step to land that career you’re truly passionate about. The Isle of Man Government apprentice team will be on-hand to help you through the whole process and include their very own Karren and Claude equivalents. Although rather than tearing strips off you in the boardroom their job is to provide mentoring and guidance to help you through the process. All you have to do is give them a call or pop in for a chat and they will furnish you with all the information you need to begin your journey.
