We’re fortunate to live in a community where corporate responsibility (CSR) is taken seriously, millions of pounds are ploughed into charitable causes by local businesses every year and we have hoards of dedicated volunteers doing amazing things for their respective charities every day. Our wee island has philanthropy running through its veins. We’re lucky to have a host of incredible individuals finding a way to make to make a difference. Roxanne Hannay is a flagship example for our island…she ’does her bit every day’ and is making a significant impact.Roxanne took a different approach to supporting a charity she was passionate about. As a working mother of two young kids, Roxanne realised that she could support ‘Cancer Research UK’ through her homemade creative sweet treats.  In 2014 Roxanne joined a ‘Relay for Life’ team and instantly became passionate about fundraising and found a creative solution to balancing her charitable work with her family life. Her mantra is something we can all take inspiration from;“No matter what I’m going through, there’s always someone who is not as strong as me and struggling for reasons that they can’t control. I don’t do this to be recognised but just to make a small difference on our amazing island”So, while the kids are in bed, Roxanne spends her evenings creating sweet treat masterpieces. The first was a chocolate house, the magnificent creation raised over £200 at raffle. The fundraising spirit snowballed, from hundreds to thousands. Roxanne masterminded an impressive charity draw with her colleague and friend Suzie, raising a cool FIVE GRAND!This Christmas, Roxanne has worked with her friends Suzie, Laura and Sarah to raise over ONE THOUSAND POUNDS. The team made hot chocolate reindeer’s on their lunch breaks. Plus Roxanne spent a solid six weeks at home creating sweet cones and then delivering them around the island. Roxanne also made donations to the children at the Women’s Refuge and Housing Matters this Christmas; This is something that I have personally been through and know how shoddy it is to spend Xmas away from your own home. My amazing husband actually paid for my supplies to go to the refuge so I wouldn’t lose out on my CRUK fundraising, as he knows how much this means to me.I’ve also made up 4 hampers for Housing Matters this year, which is the 2nd year I have done this to try and raise awareness to my friends and colleagues about the homeless epidemic that we have on Island”Roxanne’s husband Tom is bursting with pride about his wife’s latest achievements;I love Roxanne more than anything as she is the most amazing person you would ever want to meet. She’s so kind and caring, always putting others before herself.  She has literally taken every spare minute of her time to do all of her charity work, no matter how tired (or stressed) she has been. She’s so incredibly dedicated to her cause, which is just amazing to see. I’m so proud that this amazing lady is my wife. Roxanne, you’ve done incredible things this year and have certainly surpassed yourself year after year”We salute you Roxanne Hannay! And look forward to seeing how much of an impact you’ll have in 2018. Look out for more creative wonders from Roxanne as she works towards her next goal of raising £5,000 to help fight cancer.
