Thriller in the Villa has quickly cemented itself as a flagship event in the Island’s sporting and charity calendars. The events have raised tens of thousands for The Hospice and Rebecca House and tickets for this year’s event sold out in just a few hours. We take our hats off to all of the fighters involved, getting battered up in the Royal Hall isn’t out idea of fun!In true Manx style, the event set-up plays on the North/South divide. Ramsey fighters are pitched against Douglas each year. Ramsey have won every year since the event was founded 4 years ago.Gef sat down with Lindsay Leece from Team Douglas to find out more about her Thriller journey so far…

What prompted you to sign up for Thriller in the Villa?

I have done lots of exercise classes over the past 5 or so years with DL Fitness and always favoured those that included a boxing element.I thought about Thriller in the Villa a couple of times and thought it would be a good incentive for “fit for 40” … meaning I would train to fight in 2019 which would fall in my 40th year. After a spontaneous chat whilst running, again in the office the following day and a very brief check with my husband that he would be supportive, I sent my email. Before I knew it I was down at ABC (Amateur Boxing Club), signed up and getting fit for my 39th year!

How is the training going? Have you taken any hits yet?

Training is unbelievably hard! I lost 1/2 stone in the first 2 weeks alone! Literally everything goes in to it, blood, sweat and tears. The first time I got hit I cried all night and woke up with puffy eyes the next day (from crying not the hit). It’s the adrenaline that gets you…and having never even been flicked before I couldn’t process what had happened. But my team mates reassured me that everyone goes through it that first time and it gets easier.Tonight I finished with my first bloody nose … and not one tear shed!

As a Mum of two with a busy job, how are managing to pack it all in?!

Juggling work and family life is almost as hard as the training itself! At the beginning, I promised my husband that training would come second if he needed to work or go out etc. but he has been so supportive that I haven’t missed a session! The guilt of coming in from work getting changed and heading straight back out again does affect me, but I am very lucky that my boys are adaptable. And we have great family, friends and neighbours who have all mucked in to help. I owe a lot of people a lot of drinks!

Fundraising is a huge part of the event.  How have you found the support so far?!

Since joining, the drive to raise as much money as possible for Hospice IOM has been my main motivator. Being shown around and seeing the effect it has had on my friends who have lost loved ones, I know how invaluable the service is.So far I have raised around £2,500 from holding a quiz night at Bar George and pretty much begging everyone I know – my competitiveness means I want to be the top fundraiser as well as win my fight!I should also add I want to do the best I can for my coach. Jonathon puts so much of his own time in, literally every night and more, and asks for nothing in return. Only that we raise as much money as we can.

So what’s your walk out song?

I’m going to trust the organisers with my walkout song as I doubt I’ll hear it anyway with all the noise in my head. But I think “This Is Me” from The Greatest Showman would be going, so perhaps I’ll listen to that while I warm up.

What are you gonna do when it’s all over?!

I don’t have an exciting answer I’m afraid! I’m just very much looking forward to having a little down time and perhaps a short break with my family. Then I can just reflect on what hopefully will be one of my greatest achievements. I will obviously be celebrating first with a few drinks with my teammates!Huge good luck to Lindsay and everyone else involved. If you’d like to sponsor Lindsay, head over to her Just Giving page.var bannersnack_embed = {“hash”:”bv1cituzy”,”width”:672,”height”:280,”t”:1548757254,”userId”:38193901,”responsive”:true,”type”:”html5″};//cdn.bannersnack.com/iframe/embed.js
