January. It happened and we made it through. Well done, yessirs!

Despite being the most painfully tedious month of the year, a mountain of goodness still went down. setting us up nicely for a fabulous 2019…


Manx Harriers

Our very own Manx Harriers ladies became the Lancashire Cross Country champs for a mind blowing SIXTH year in a row!! The team comprised of six athletic legends; Karen Shimmin, Caroline Mayers, Laura Dickinson, Rachael Franklin, Gail Griffiths and Elissa Morris. There were also three individual medals, two silvers and a gold(!), for Rachael, Caroline and Gail.Well done ladies!


Aimee Ford, owner of Butterfingers Cakes Isle of Man, only went and won a bloody GOLD at Salon Culinaire, the UK’s most prestigious chef competition!!I mean… just look at it 😮🤤 

National chips, cheese and gravy day

You’re damn right it happened again!For the second year, a whole loada manxies declared their true love for the unofficial manx dish, with local chippies around the Island serving up the beautiful cuisine.This year, Gef teamed up with local superheroes Manx Radio and the Isle of Man Creamery to spread the good word LOUD AND PROUD!Local restaurants created their own interpretations of the dish, with this spectacle from the Fishery Restaurant, where the unofficial dish met the official Manx dish! Yep, chips, cheese, gravy and QUEENIES!And the good folks at Port Jack Chippy were donating proceeds to Hospice Shops Isle of Man!A good day all round ❤️ 

Abortion bill passed

After a long and somewhat controversial debate, the Abortion Reform Bill 2018 received Royal Assent, resulting in the Abortion Reform Act.This means that women who want a choice, now have one. 

Cannabis consultation

Manx residents have been invited to share their views on the use of cannabis products for medicinal purposes and the growing of hemp for industrial use.If you’ve got a say on the matter folks, get it heard! Submit your thoughts here. 

Shaun Wylde places second in the UK weightlifting rankings

At the start of January, local legend Shaun Wylde ranked 2nd in the UK for olympic weightlifting! Over the course of 2018, Shaun has taken place in four competitions and has brought home no less than FOUR wins; two being British Champion titles and one WORLD champion titles.Phew* FAN US DOWN! 

Love Tech event raises over £11,500

The legendary Love Tech ladies played host to over 250 people at their first fundraiser of the year. Guests attended the Broadway Cinema for Isle of Man premier of ‘General Magic’.The award-winning documentary was co-directed by Manx-born Sarah kerruish who was in attendance and did a Q&A sesh after the screening, so major Manx-pride going on!Girl power ✌🏻  

Manx Honours!

From the Queens Birthday Honours list last summer, and the New Years Honours list, some manx royalty (basically, they’ve been in the queen’s house) got a well deserved shout out from her Maj.Roger W Smith OBE – Watchmaker extraordinaire Lesley Turnbull MBE and Voirrey Heaton MBE for their selfless efforts to ill children and equality in the NHSWing CDR Pheric Thrussell – awarded British Empire Medal for service to the Isle of Man Cadet ForcesAnd in the New Years honours list:Deemster David Doyle CBE – for outstanding services to Manx lawStewart Clauge MBE – for his contribution to the Lonan and Laxey communitiesMartin Benson – awarded British Empire Medal for his 40 year service with the Rushen Emergency AmbulanceMary Bridson – awarded British Empire Medal for her work with the St John AmbulanceDoing us proud guys ❤️ 


The snazzy folks at Drewry’s and Purite raised a whole loada cash monies from a series of christmas pop-ups for (the newly decorated) Lesley Turnbull MBE’s charity ‘Wish Upon A Dream’. 

Castletown golf links

Our lil’ old Castletown Golf Links course was named in the world’s top 100 courses by! We all know it’s a beaut of a spot, so thanks for the recognition!

Big gigs

Over the past couple of months, the Villa Gaiety has been announcing some pretty epic gigs for us to look forward to this year…We’ve got a lot of funny fellas coming to see us, with Russell Kane, Josh Widdicombe, Rich Hall, Dara O’Brien and Jimmy Carr gracing us with their presence.One for the classical offcianados (and mums 😉) Aled Jones and Russell Watson having a sing off, with The Vamps here for the young whippersnappers.AND local legends Jack and Lily Wolter’s band, Penelope Isles return to the island to kick off their new album tour. Check out what’s coming up here. Pretty cracking start to 2019 dont’cha think?!
