Here’s your weekly roundup of all things GOOD!

Community Efforts

 - This week, the Stoutt family have been proving that no matter where they are in the world, the Manx public is committed to helping this community. The Stoutts, who have been living in Hyderabad, India for the last two and a half years, are missing out on their summer in the IOM this year thanks to lockdown. Not wanting to sit and do nothing, the family of four decided to set themselves a challenge to raise money for Isle Listen, a mental health charity here on the island. The family started their challenge on the 29th June and are planning on walking every day around their gated community until the 10th July, often in very hot temperatures under the Indian sun. Julie, Jonathan, Jasmine and Daisy have already raised around £340 on their Just Giving page which you can support here. From Gef to India, well done guys and good luck with the challenge!

 - Rebecca House this week announced that their friend, 8-year-old Dylan Walton, would be taking on his own walking challenge to raise money for the charity. Dylan, who has a rare condition involving conditions such as Cerebral Palsy and Epilepsy, has been visiting Rebecca House since 2013. On the 25th July, Dylan will be attempting to walk the 620m climb of Snaefell Mountain, completing the first 414m at the NSC before climbing the remaining 206m up from the Bungalow, alongside his family and members of Rebecca House, including CEO Anne Mills. Dylan is hoping to be able to give back to the people who have helped him so much with his mum Lucy saying they’ve “helped him make some amazing friends and be the person he is today!” He has already raised over £1,100 on his JustGiving page and we can’t wait to see everyone cheering Dylan on as he takes on this amazing challenge!

Online Best Bits

  • If you’ve been living under a rock for the last few years, first of all, not a very good time to come back, and secondly you may be one of the few people who hasn’t heard of the hit musical ‘Hamilton.’ The 11 Tony award winning show, which follows the life of Alexander Hamilton, one of the founding father of the USA, first hit Broadway (the one in New York, not by Douglas prom) in 2015 and has since become one of the biggest musicals in the world. Known for its hip hop and rap soundtrack, the musical has just been made available to watch on Disney+, the first time a recording has been made available on a streaming service. The filmed version of the show features the original Broadway cast, including writer Lin Manuel Miranda who is now a big name in Hollywood after writing the music for films like Disney’s Moana and starring in Mary Poppins Returns. The film can be found by searching Disney+ for ‘Hamilton.’

  • If you thought you heard a faint ‘vwoorp vwoorp’ somewhere recently, that may have been the sound of the TARDIS bringing three different Doctors from Doctor Who together. In a rare event, Jodie Whittaker, Matt Smith and David Tennant recently came together, via the wonders of video calling, to talk about the show they have all starred in. Talking about their best fan interactions, favourite episodes and what makes the show special for them, the three Doctors were promoting the release of American streaming service HBO MAX which will feature 11 series of the newest version of the show, in the IOM the show can be found on Netflix. You can watch the video of the three actors on Youtube here.

Foodie Recommendations

This week, the Gef team hit up Harbour Lights in Peel for some lunching. The newly redecorated restaurant is light, bright and the food was 👌.

Here’s a lil review of some of the foods we devoured.

Veggie breakfast

  • Squeaky cheese, avo, tomatoes, poachy eggs, beans, fried potatoes and (shrooms swapped out for) a hollandaise sauce – elite breakfast level.

Fruit punch drink

  • A super fruity palette cleanser with refill jug, a lovey touch! When you top up the glass it mixes up the red berry fruits at the bottom and turns the drink pink with a punchy berry blast.

(Warm) choccy cake

  • Get this fella with ice cream. It’ll melt into the warm chocolate icing, creating gooey chocolatey, creamy goodness.
