IT’S A TRADITION HOWARD LOVES: IT’S THE ANNUAL STATE OF THE NATION ADDRESS

TO THE POLITICIANS: WE’RE HERE BECAUSE OF THE PEOPLE ASKED US TO MAKE THE ISLAND THE BEST IT CAN BE.

NOT EASY THOUGH IS IT FELLAS? 2020 HAS SHOWN US THAT.

WE’VE HAD TO INNOVATE, ADAPT, OVERCOME, LIKE THAT BEAR GRILLS MEME.

WE’VE DONE OUR BEST OVER THE PANDEMIC, EVEN IF WE DIDN’T ALWAYS GET IT RIGHT. WE’VE TRIED TO BE TRANSPARENT: I’VE BEEN TELLING THE GREAT MANX PUBLIC WHAT’S WHAT.

I DON’T WANT THIS STATEMENT TO BE A LONG LIST OF THINGS WE’VE DONE WITH CLEVER METAPHORS. WE’VE HAD ENOUGH IN THE LAST SIX MONTHS. SICK OF THE WORD UNPRECEDENTED.

I’M A HUMBLE MANXMAN, NOT A BORN POLITICIAN. JUST TRYING TO MY BIT FOR THE ISLAND

IT IS TIME TO REMEMBER THOSE WHO ARE NOT IN THE CHAMBER TODAY. WE SORELY MISS BILL MALARKEY. WE WISH MS COSTAIN, WHO DEPARTED THE HONOURABLE COURT THIS SUMMER, THE BEST.

SUN SETS, SUN RISES. WELCOME CLAIRE CHRISTIAN AND PAUL QUINE. LOOK FORWARD TO WORKING WITH YOU.

TWELVE MONTHS HAVE BEEN CHALLENGING, AND WE’VE ACHIEVED A LOT:

–   WE HAVE THE EQUALITY LEGISLATION IN FULL EFFECT.

–   BROKE GROUND ON THE NEW FERRY TERMINAL IN LIVERPOOL

–   TREASURY MINISTER DELIVERED AN AMBITIOUS BUDGET, JUST BEFORE COVID

–   CHANGE IS ON THE WAY: TRANSFORMATION PROGRAMMES IN PROGRESS ON CLIMATE CHANGE, HEALTH AND EDUCATION

WHAT WE’RE GOING TO DO:

–   DESIGNATING THE MINISTER FOR HOME AFFAIRS AS THE MINISTER FOR JUSTICE AND HOME AFFAIRS. WE’LL BE CREATING A COUNCIL OF MINISTERS SUB-COMMITTEE WITH RESPONSIBILITY FOR JUSTICE POLICY WHICH THE MINISTER FOR JUSTICE AND HOME AFFAIRS WILL CHAIR

–   HER MAJESTY’S INSPECTORATE OF CONSTABULARY AND FIRE AND RESCUE SERVICE WILL BE REQUESTED TO UNDERTAKE AN INSPECTION FOR BOTH THE CONSTABULARY AND FIRE AND RESCUE SERVICE

BREXIT:  IT’S IMPORTANT

COVID: DOMINATED 2020 BUT THE GREAT MANX PUBLIC ROSE TO THE CHALLENGE. THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO PLAYED A PART, IN EVERY SECTOR. IT WAS A TEAM EFFORT. GOOD JOB.

NONE OF US HAVE A CRYSTAL BALL. BUT WE NEED TO MOVE FORWARD DESPITE UNCERTAINTY.

ECONOMY: WELL DONE TO TREASURY MINISTER, MINISTER FOR ENTERPRISE AND TEAMS DEALING WITH INCREDIBLE PRESSURES. NOT OUT OF THE WOODS YET THOUGH, BUT IT’S ENCOURAGING.

AS THE LATE TOM PETTY (HAPPY BIRTHDAY BTW) SANG “IT IS TIME TO GET GOING. WHAT LIES AHEAD, I HAVE NO WAY OF KNOWING”

PRIDE COMES BEFORE A FALL. HERE’S WHAT WE HAVEN’T GOT RIGHT:

–   LAXEY FLOODS COULD HAVE HAD BETTER PREVENTION

–   WAS COVID RESPONSE PERFECT? NO

–   THE PROM? IT’LL BE WORTH IT ON IN THE END!

FYI – MHK LADS AND LASSES. I KNOW THERE’S AN ELECTION COMING UP AND YOU’LL ALL BE LOOKING TO SHOWBOAT, BUT DON’T FORGET THE DAY JOB, YEAH?

THERE’S A HELLA WORK STILL TO DO ON IMPORTANT ISSUES LIKE CLIMATE CHANGE, DOMESTIC ABUSE AND SEXUAL OFFENCES.

IN SHORT: WE HAVE DONE A LOT BUT HAVE A LOT TO DO. TO QUOTE SHELLY, “FEAR NOT FOR THE FUTURE, WEEP NOT FOR THE PAST”.

PHRASE OF THE DAY #GREATMANXPUBLIC
