Charitable Endeavours – Extraordinary Islanders Finalists

Media partnership with Extraordinary Islanders

The work of charities has been vital for so many of us during lockdown. The Charitable Endeavours award, sponsored by Isle of Man Advertising & PR, is celebrating the individuals who have supported charities during the pandemic as well as the charitable organisations that have shown resourcefulness, adaptability, and innovation throughout.

Jackie Bridson

Jackie Bridson is the Chief Executive of Live at Home. In ordinary times, the charity provides a 1-2-1 befriending service and events to improve the quality of life and eliminate isolation and loneliness among older people on the Isle of Man. With lockdown resulting in these vital in-person services having to come to a halt, Jackie transformed the charity’s service provision to make sure its 500+ members continued being cared for during lockdown. This meant that the 1-2-1 service was replaced with regular phone calls, a free helpline and home delivery service. Jackie also managed to recruit 42 new volunteers during lockdown, and provided activity packs to bust the boredom of those who were shielding.

Emilie King

Who doesn’t love a bit of cake? 10-year-old Emilie King got into the kitchen and created some incredible bakes with her family over lockdown. She wrote all the recipes down and as soon as she gathered ten, produced a book so people could make her incredible creations at home. Not only was her book – ‘Emilie’s Isolation Bakes’ – intended to turn us all into master bakers, Emilie wanted to raise money for those feeling the effects of COVID-19. Emilie’s Isolation Bakes was a success: raising over £800 for the Friends of Noble’s Hospital, with copies going all over the island and even further afield.

Christian Varley MBE

While many of us were attempting the ‘Couch to 5k’ over lockdown, Christian Varley took on a (literal) marathon challenge by undertaking not one, but 19 (!) marathons in 19 consecutive days to raise money for the Manx Solidarity Fund.

As a result of his efforts, he raised over £100,000 for the charity, which was formed to support local causes and individuals that found themselves in financial difficulty due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
