Two sitting MHKs have confirmed they will be standing in this year’s General Election.
Onchan MHK Rob Callister and Douglas North MHK Ralph Peake have said they will both seek a second term in the Keys when voters go to the polls in September.
Taking the members in alphabetical order, Mr Callister was first elected in 2016 and has served as a member of the Department for Enterprise, as well as Children’s Champion and a member of both the DoI and Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture.
Mr Peake was first elected at a by-election in 2015. Since 2016 he has served as a member of the Treasury. He has also served as a member of DEFA and DHSC in the last administration.
In a statement Mr Callister said: ‘My primary focus has always been on representing Onchan together with the wider Manx Community through supporting individuals, scrutinising government policies and ensuring that the right decisions are backed up by solid evidence, however difficult those decisions might be for the island. On Thursday September 23 a House of Keys General Election will be held, and it is now my intention to stand for re-election for the Constituency of Onchan. Over the past nine years, I believe that I have been very visible and engaging with all aspects of our community, approachable, hardworking and bringing a new level of energy to such important roles.’
Meanwhile Mr Peake said: ‘The last twelve months have been a very challenging time for us all – the people, communities and businesses of the Isle of Man.
Becoming a member of the Treasury and taking on political responsibility for Social Security and Customs & Excise at the beginning of this administration, and being an integral part of this close knit team throughout that period, ensured we stepped up to the massive challenges the island faced when the pandemic arrived last year.
The next several months will be crucial in re-energising our economy, our people and our social community. Fundamental to this will be recognising and working on the opportunities which will present themselves. The knowledge and experience gained over the last six years representing Douglas North, will, I believe, be invaluable to form that positive future.’
