Rugby 7s Event a ‘Practice Run’ For Major Festival Next Year

Douglas Rugby Club will be hosting a 7’s festival at their Port-e-Chee ground on Peel Road this June, which will be a stepping stone to something much bigger for future years.

This year’s 7’s festival will cater for all rugby capabilities over the weekend with versions to suit all abilities; this will include competitive 7s and corporate & social touch 7stournaments.

The festival will run from Friday June 11 through to Sunday June 13.

In addition to the rugby there will be a comprehensive calendar of sporting events taking place at the grounds including; Grass Track Cycle races organised by Cycle 360, Manx Fun Run and races organised by Manx Harriers, Highland Games StrongMann, Young Farmers Tug of War and Silly Sports.

Carl Murray, Douglas Rugby Club Director of Rugby, said: “It is great to finally be able to host an event like the Manx 7s Festival of Sport at Douglas Rugby Club, especially after the difficult last 12 months. Everyone we have spoken to so far is really keen to be involved and put on a great weekend of fun and entertainment.’

To keep the crowds entertained there is a full programme for the weekend; TT Senior Race Day entertainment, classic bike parade, Steve Colley pyrotechnic stunt show, bands, kids bouncy castles, Manx food & drink stalls and a Veterans charity rugby match.

Carl added: ‘This years’ festival doubles up as a practice run for an event planned for Summer 2022, we have signed contracts but are just waiting for clearance to publish details of the event. Aside from TT2022 and the MGP this could be the biggest spectator sporting event on the island next year.’

This should be a weekend to remember with some great sporting events and lots of fun and entertainment around the grounds for the family.

The 7’s Rugby tournament will take place over the weekend with the fiirst round of matches being held on Friday June 11 with the finals being played on Sunday June 13. As with all 7’s festivals the emphasis will be playing rugby so there will be play offs for every team.

The social touch tournament takes place on Saturday June 12 as it describes this is all about fun with a competitive edge, teams can include; sports clubs, mates teams, women’s team, Junior (under 15 and above), coaches, supporters or parents! Corporate Touch 7s tournament takes place on Sunday June 12  in the same format as the social touch rugby.

Touch Rugby is a non-contact version of rugby and is played by male and female players in mixed teams. A team consists of 10 players, seven players are allowed on the field at any one time, with three substitutes off the field. Reserves can be continuously substituted at any time from one side of the field. Teams will be mixed with at least 2 female players on the pitch at all times.
