John Wannenburgh, businessman and Sporting & Dining Club owner, has announced he will stand in September’s General Election in the constituency of Douglas North.
Originally from South Africa but moved to the island in 1994, he’s spent the past 15 years working in the events, entertainment, and hospitality sectors. He completed a BusinessStudies degree through the International Business School in 2008 and has lived in North Douglas for the last 18 years.
In Mr Wannenburgh’s announcement, he said: ‘The island warmly embraced me as soon as I arrived here. It’s because of this that I was able to build a thriving business and now, it’s time for me to give something back. I know I can bring a fresh perspective to the problems the island faces.’
Mr Wannenburgh’s lists his priorities as the economic recovery of the island, support for small business, and creating opportunities that encourage the island’s youth to keep living and working here.
In announcing his candidacy, Mr Wanneburgh joins sitting MHK Ralph Peake in confirming his intention to seek election in Douglas North. The constituency’s other MHK, Health and Social Care Minister David Ashford, has not yet declared his intention.
The election is on September 23, if you’re planning to vote, make sure you’re registered and if you’re planning to stand, make sure to let Gef know by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
