What is Grounding?

Have you ever felt the feeling of relief or liberation after taking your shoes off and walking barefoot on the grass? This is grounding. Grounding or ‘Earthing’ is a practice of planting your bare feet directly on the Earth – it’s as simple as that. It has been thoroughly researched and was found to have some life-changing benefits, including: decreasing inflammation in the body and boosting the immune system (Oschman et al, 2015).

How does it work?

All around us everything has an electrical charge, even humans. Similar to how we get essential vitamins and energy from the sun, we also receive this through the Earth. The Earth has a negative charge and when we ground to the Earth we receive that negative charge through electrons. Our body needs electrons to attach to ‘free radicals’ which help neutralise inflammation. Inflammation is seen in multiple conditions such as: arthritis, asthma, skin conditions, heart disease, cancers and even mental health conditions such as depression.

Benefits:

● Boosts the immune system
● Reduced chronic pain
● Defence against inflammation
● Thins blood and minimizes blood clotting
● Relief from severe menopausal and PMS symptoms
● Maintain healthy blood pressure and circulation
● Improved sleep

Ideas for beautiful places to ground: The first and most accessible place to ground is your back garden. More scenic places on the Isle of Man:

● Peel beach
● The Arboretum
● Railway tracks
● Marown Playing fields
● The Sound
● The Raggatt
● Glen Moar
● Glen Wyllin Campsite/ beach

Testimonies

Rebecca Nathan 24: ‘Grounding makes me feel free and liberated. It gives me a fresh vision for the day ahead.’

Katie Lee 22: ‘I honestly do think it improves my balance… In everyday life I think it’s like any meditative practice, making you feel more calm and centred. Although, what for me is special about grounding is the time spent appreciating our connection to the earth.’

Amy Quayle 22: ‘I got taught the grounding technique to conquer stress and panic. I feel like it’s benefitted me.’

Think for a moment about the last time you actually grounded to the Earth. In western society, we are constantly insulated from the Earth through our rubber soles. It sounds so simple but it’s been proven to boost your immune system which is so important in the world we live in today. For any sceptics, if you’re struggling, it’s the most risk-free and pain-free treatment you could give yourself. Throw off those shoes and see for yourself.
