So what can you expect as a family turning up to Culture Fest, well, where to begin?

We’ve planned our Culture Fest afternoon with families and children at the heart of it all. Most food vendors will be offering children’s portions at lower prices and there will be a dedicated kids bar, featuring slushies and mocktails so all the U18’s can feel part of the festivities.

We have organised an array of activities and entertainment for every child (and child at heart) to take part in. Whether fast paced action or calm and relaxing fun, we hope there will be something for everyone to enjoy.

First up, Active Souls, run by Mikey Haslett and his fantastic gang.

Active Souls are one of the groups in attendance at Culture Fest 2021, bringing their high energy team to put on playground games for all the family. They’ll be running sessions for not just kids but adults too, giving you the opportunity to unlock your inner child with classic games like Dodgeball, British Bulldogs and Manhunt all on their games list. Spaces in the sessions will be limited though, so you’ll have to keep an eye on their timetable to see when you want to join in and ensure you arrive well ahead of time.

Secondly, we have Mad Jack’s, bringing all things axe throwing, but don’t worry parents, they’ve promised they’ll be bringing their plastic axes.

Their highly trained team is made up of axe throwing coaches who will teach you everything you need to know. These ‘axperts’ will be on-hand throughout your session to support you, keep score, ensure safety rules are being obeyed and, most importantly, make sure you’re having a good time! Every session begins with a health and safety talk, after which your axpert will then talk you through the scoring system and the games and challenges you can choose to play through. They will then demonstrate multiple techniques for you to learn so you can begin to throw like a Norse God yourself. Their mobile truck will be on site all day during Culture Fest for people of all ages to take part!

Next, for something a bit more relaxing, our friends at Craftwork Studios will be coming along.

Craftworks is a ‘paint your own pottery’ studio based in Castletown, but are making the trip up to The Nunnery for the day to help us celebrate. They’ll be operating a little bit differently on the day of Culture Fest, with two different ways to join in. The first opportunity is by attaining one of the 50 vouchers they’ve given us to hand out, which will be gifted to children attending the festival by the Culture Fest team for a variety of reasons. For example: taking part in workshops, using good teamwork or listening skills in one of the other sessions and showcasing any of the other values that Culture Fest volunteers will be looking out for. These vouchers will be valid to claim at the Craftwork Studios stall, on the day, to paint an item of your choice.

The second opportunity will be to simply buy a piece of pottery from the stall that you can paint right there. Craftworks will be providing a selection of figurines, coasters, plates and mugs to choose from and, after you’ve completed your masterpiece at the stall, they will be glazed and fired back at the studio, ready to collect the following week.

And finally, is it even a festival without face painting?

The lovely Kim from Palettes Face Painting will be around from 11-4pm to paint your face as a princess, spiderman, unicorn or cat. Sit in the chair and see yourself transform in just 3 minutes, it’s as simple as that.

We would like to thank our sponsors KPMG for helping us to ensure that the Culture Fest family area is free for all and a safe space for children and families to enjoy.

In addition to all of this, we are running a range of workshops on the day, presented by a number of different organisations and charities. Everyone involved has been challenged to come up with something educational and fun with the full line up of presenters and workshop names to be released soon!

It’s not just everything outlined here that’ll be on offer, there’s still more to come including a free bus service running to and from Culture Fest, so we encourage you to keep your eyes peeled and make sure you’re following both @poc_iom and @gefthemongoose to learn about all the latest news as soon as it comes.
