Former Ramsey MHK Leonard Singer has announced his intention to stand for the constituency in this year’s General Election.

Mr Singer said: ‘There are three main reasons for my decision. The re-emergence of the proposal to build a huge Marina at South Beach in Ramsey, to ensure that there is an election in Ramsey so that residents have the opportunity to exercise their right to vote and express their opinions and using my experience and commitment to speak up for the town and its residents in what will be a difficult 5 years ahead.

‘When the Marina in the Bay plans were first announced in 2019 I discussed my total opposition to the scheme with many people in the town. Then the proposal seemed to disappear but has now re-emerged and my determination is just as strong, opposing a development that would destroy everything that Ramsey and its bay mean to us. It is a ‘fantasy project’ in my opinion. The great response by the public to the petition is so encouraging. Keep signing.’

Mr. Singer says he is concerned that neither Ramsey MHK’s have yet declared their opposition to the Marina scheme. He said: ‘I will oppose this scheme by all means at my disposal. If I am successfully elected I would move a motion in Tynwald at the earliest opportunity opposing any Marina development on South Beach Ramsey.

‘There are many local issues that need addressing in Ramsey including better accessibility to the doctors, affordable housing, attracting new business and job opportunities and pressing for improvement in road and pavement surfaces. I would use my experience and continuing enthusiasm to work for the town and its residents. For me, it has always been ‘Ramsey First ‘In regard to national issues, focus should include reviving the economy, building up reserves, supporting mental health issues, tackling the drug problem, nurturing our young people and having a sensible approach to climate change.’

Mr Singer joins Dr Alex Allinson and Liberal Vannin leader Lawrie Hooper in announcing his intention to contest the election.

The General Election is on Thursday September 23, if you’re planning to vote, make sure you’re registered and if you’re planning to stand, make sure you let Gef know by emailing
