In 2019, an average of 131 people took their own lives every week across the UK.

But while that figure is horrific, it has been able to inspire some good, as it encouraged Louise Crellin to take on an exhausting challenge to raise money for a mental health charity. All the money raised will actually be split between Isle Listen and Sepsis.

Having started just under three weeks ago, Louise is on the final day of her ‘131 challenge’. The challenge sees her perform 131 weighted squats, 131 weighted hip thrusts, 3km on the rower and 3.55km on an assault bike every day for 20 days. And in case maths isn’t your strong point, this collectively adds up to 131km over the 20 days.

Louise and Annabel

Louise told Gef: ‘So I first did this last year and I wanted to do some fundraising for a local mental health charity, but I wanted to correlate it with something meaningful. So we looked at the suicide stats in the UK and it was 131 a week and that’s where the name of the challenge came from.’

She added: ‘Last year I did it on a normal bike, but this year I’m doing it on a crossfit assault bike. My target was £1,000 and I was nearly at that when I put a post out on Facebook saying if I got to £1,500 by Saturday then I’d increase the weights on the thrusts and the squats and try my hardest to get it done in like 50 minutes whereas normally it takes me about an hour.’

Louise has been doing her daily routine at CrossFit in Douglas. She said the team who run it have been very supportive and accommodating, even keeping it open late one night when she was delayed.
