Public Sector Rents to rise by 2%

The Department of Infrastructure has announced that a 2% increase in rents will take effect from 1st April 2022.

The Department said that the rise has been carefully considered in light of ongoing economic pressure from the coronavirus pandemic and the rising cost of building and maintenance materials. The impacts of both factors continue to be felt and are affecting routine repairs and redevelopment projects.

Infrastructure Minister Tim Crookall MHK said: ’The rising cost of maintenance is a concern for the local authorities and the Department as a whole, especially the housing team. The cost of materials for use in both general repairs and redevelopment projects continues to increase and provision must be made to accommodate this trend.’

Tenants who have their rental costs met by the Government as part of their income-assessed Social Security benefits will not be affected by the change.

In real terms, this means renters in a 1 bed flat can expect to pay approximately £1.29 more a week, while those in a 4 bed house can expect to pay £2.68 more a week.

“A credit to the island”

Last week, Isle of Man Meats hosted the Primestock Show- one of the biggest events in the farming community calendar. The event, organised by the Southern District Agricultural Society, was undoubtedly a success, with Adrian Crowe, from the Meat & Livestock Commission, describing the competition as being ‘a credit to the island’.

Mr Crowe also said that “the standard was so high the Island’s farmers would be competitive at shows anywhere in the UK”.

While we all know the incredible quality of Manx meat, it’s fantastic to see recognition from beyond the island. Congratulations to all the prize winners!

Dates for White Boys

The White Boys is a 200 year old tradition, in which saints slag each other off until they kill each other, and then resurrected to sing and dance. Only in the Isle of Man, eh?

There are two groups of White Boys (Peel White Boys and Southern White Boys) who are quite different from each other- so it’s worth checking out them both. You can find out about the dates and times here:–locations-for-the-white-boys-2021-700971/
