Ballakermeen head teacher Adrienne Burnett has written to parents requesting that two school years stay at home for a day each for the remainder of this week.
Mrs Burnett said this is due to ‘high levels of employee absence’.
Year 10 will be asked to work from home tomorrow, with Year 9 doing so on Friday.
In a letter posted on the school’s website, Mrs Burnett said: ‘This week, on average, there have been over 25 teaching or support staff absent each day.
‘In addition, nearly half of the canteen staff are currently unavailable for work. Furthermore, we have a real paucity of supply teachers to call upon, which is further limiting our options. As you can appreciate, this is putting unsustainable pressure on the school.’
She added that the year groups will have access to online work portals.
Mrs Burnett concluded by saying: ‘Please be aware that students will not be directed to specific work. They are expected to locate and complete tasks appropriate to their year group and on topics that they may have been studying. Staff are not expected to provide further instructions, as they are either off ill, or will be teaching classes in school.
‘Please be assured that this decision has not been taken lightly and I thank you in advance for your understanding and support. We sincerely hope that we will be in a position to teach all students, face to face, in the very near future.’
