The AG’s office has announced that the gov is seeking expressions of interest from experienced contractors to provide Vouchers for Free School Meals.
This follows from the commitment to look at a long term strategy for school holidays after the announcement of support during the Easter holidays. A similar set up was used during the pandemic and recent school holidays.
There has long been criticism from some quarters that if children and families need support during term-times, then they definitely need it at half-term and during longer holidays.
On the gov’s tenders page, it says the DESC requires the successful applicant to ‘provide Free School Meal Vouchers, to the gov’s specifications, within a 48 hour turn-around period, for over 2,000 recipients’.
Like the current system, the vouchers would be redeemable from pre-designated stores on the island.
It adds: ‘The purpose of the scheme is to assist in ensuring those free school meal recipients have access to food, avoiding food hunger, whilst not in school or college. The work would be undertaken in a clearly phased process – request, production, usage, audit and refund.’
Expressions of interest must be submitted through the Portal by noon on Wednesday April 22.
