Course Buddies

Beach Buddies hits the road this week as it returns to the Southern 100 course for a pre-TT meet cleanup.

The cleanup gets underway from 6.30pm on Wednesday evening. Founder Bill Dale said: ‘It all started as an idea by southern residents and long-standing Beach Buddies volunteers Ron Ronan and David Wilkinson. We also clean up the course again just before the Southern 100 itself.’ The meeting point is the Southern 100 HQ, is not planned to take longer than 90 minutes, but due to the nature of this tidy up, it is limited to over 18s only.

Fenella and Friends

Isle of Man Railway Locomotive No8 Fenella has spent the weekend away at the Beyer Peacock gathering at the Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway.

Fenella, built in Manchester in 1894, returned to the UK for the first time in 128 years, to be displayed with other engines from the same works at Welshpool’s Raven Square Station. Volunteers from the Islands Heritage Railways were on hand on the site to tell the story of the steam engine and, with two big celebrations coming up next year, to help promote the Isle of Man and its unique heritage transport systems.

In 2023 the Steam Railway marks its 150th anniversary on July 1 and the Manx Electric Railway is 130 years old, with its celebration on September 10, in between the two single dates an extra special Transport Festival will also mark the two anniversaries during the last week in July. Two local volunteers and four UK based IOM Railways enthusiasts manned the information desk, and gave out Save the Date cards and other leaflets to several hundred interested people.
