Less than a month after making its competitive debut, Cycling Club Isle of Man has scored its first victory with Jamie Fletcher winning the fourth round of the Marsh Tracks Summer Series on Wednesday.
Having finished in third place in a previous round, Fletcher went into this week’s race in strong form.
The criterium took place at the Marsh Tracks Cycle Circuit in Rhyl with riders racing full gas for almost an hour.
It was a very aggressive race with plenty of riders trying to get off the front and avoid the bunch sprint. However, the breakaway could not go clear with the peloton closing down everything that went off the front.
With each move that was brought back, the sprint finish looked more likely and so it would come to be. Fletcher bided his time perfectly as the group approached the last bend, sitting in the slipstream of the leading rider before launching his sprint with the finish line in sight. Once Fletcher had made his move, none of the other riders could bring him back and he would take victory.
Jamie said: ‘It was a solid 50 minutes of intense racing. Three or four riders, including myself, tried attacking a number of times, but none of us was letting each other go so it came down to a sprint. I went into the final corner in second wheel, which is ideal as it’s then a short sprint to the line. I then went around the rider on the front and held off the others to win it.’
Fletcher will be racing again soon at the Stockton Velo29 Grand Prix this weekend along with Cycling Club Isle of Man teammate James Harrison.
