Students Raise Over £3,000 for Ukraine

A tutor group at Ballakermeen has now raised over £3,000 towards the Red Cross’ efforts in Ukraine.

Amy Shelton’s Year 11 group have held a series of fundraising events since returning from the February half-term.

As well as a Mother’s day prize draw, bake sale, milkshake bar and sponsored sea dip, the group held a very successful Father’s day prize draw in June, which raised a further £750 for the Red Cross.

Mrs Shelton said: ‘More recently we have been involved with Manx Support for Ukraine as part of their Shoe Box Appeal, supplying 13 beautiful shoe boxes for internally displaced Ukrainian children, filled with essential toiletries, stationary, treats and small gifts. We also sent a box of summer shoes as part of their appeal.

‘On Friday July 15, we held the final fund raising event of the year, an ice cream sale, generously sponsored by Tesco and Shoprite. The weather was on our side and the students were very excited to get involved. We raised £155 from the ice cream sale, taking our total raised for the Red Cross’s efforts in Ukraine to just over £3000. The students and staff are very proud of our accomplishments and pleased to be doing our bit to support people affected by the conflict in Ukraine.’

The students have been supported by members of the local business community, including; The Slightly Pretentious Pizza Company, Andreas Meat Co, Sarah Birtles Photography, Apeman, Lazer Mayhem, The Motor Museum, Ny Cassyn Reflexology, Oscars Bar, Manx Whippy Ice Cream Van, Sea Kayaking Isle of Man, POP, Onchan Pleasure Park, Morrison Photos, Java Express, The Terrace Chippy, Masala Zone, The Co-op, Starbucks, Dominos and Pepsi Max Bowl.
