Douglas Parking Chaos Sparks Public Outcry – Again

Douglas City Centre Management is finally taking another look at parking, after the public (and a fair few fed-up businesses) said, yet again, that it’s a major reason they don’t bother coming into town.

In a recent Facebook post, DCCM asked: ‘What one thing would make you visit Douglas more often?’

Unsurprisingly, the overwhelming answer was: parking. More spaces, cheaper rates, better disabled and family access, and easier drop-offs – all mentioned a lot.

This latest grumble-fest comes hot on the heels of the closure of the chaotic-but-free Lord Street car park, which many used despite the risk of getting boxed in by other rogue parkers. It’s now shut, with the land fenced off ahead of a big development that’ll include a cinema, flats and shops – but no new public parking.

Businesses like Fork It café and The Eatery are calling for year-round free promenade parking, not just at Christmas. They say access is getting harder and it’s hurting trade.

DCCM says it’s looking into options like free parking at peak times and better spaces for parents and disabled drivers – but also reckons there’s no shortage of spaces, just a shortage of people willing to pay. Shaw’s Brow, for example, is £2 for a whole Saturday and barely fills up.

So is it a parking problem or a pricing one? Either way, expect more arguments and social media comments before any changes are made.
