Band Urges Islanders to Back Live Music Scene

An island Blues band is urging young people to get out and support local music and independent venues as the warmer months approach.

Spotty Dog, a relatively new four-piece made up of Rob Harding, Patrick Knight, Bryce Collins and Tom Baker, have been building a reputation on the island’s live circuit and are gearing up for a busy summer of performances.

The group say they want to see a revival of the island’s live music scene, encouraging people to rediscover the atmosphere of packed venues, dancing crowds and grassroots talent.

While the band are keen to grow their own following, they stress their message is about backing the wider scene, from emerging musicians to the venues that host them.

They point out that many independent venues have faced a difficult winter, compounded by the rising cost of living, and say community support is vital to keep live music thriving.

And while venues such as Quids Inn, Black Dog Oven and The Mitre in Ramsey (to name just a few) are continually hosting Manx musicians, there’s always room for more.

Guitarist Rob Harding said: ‘Having lived in the UK and knowing how much more special it is over here, the Isle of Man can’t afford to lose its huge depth of musical talent and culture.

‘Davy Knowles and Back Door Slam are a perfect example, when live music was at the forefront and allowed a huge global success story from such a small place.

‘Currently we have Silo, who are playing Download Festival this summer, and Loft47 who could hold their own against any band in the world.

‘Encouraging bands by getting out to watch is the way this continues and we get the next crop of worldwide musicians.

‘In the age of AI where it can be hard to differentiate between the real and the fake, live music ensures that hard work and talent shines through.’

Spotty Dog say they hope their run of summer gigs will not only entertain audiences but also play a part in reinvigorating the island’s music scene.

They’re back performing this evening (Friday) at Black Dog Oven in Peel from 7.30pm.
