The North West Counties Football League has apologised after posting a tweet referencing the paedophile Gary Glitter.

The organisation which runs the league FC Isle of Man plays in, was responding to a fan in the, now deleted, remark.

After some comments were made by the account @Pagga88, the NWCFL replied with a tweet referencing the disgraced musician.

In a statement last night, league chairman Paul Lawler said: ‘The League account posted a response to a negative post yesterday which was inappropriate and has since been deleted. I have reminded our media team of the standards we expect of clubs on social media, also applies to the League.’

@Pagga88 has also tweeted to say that his comment was a joke.
