Tynwald Remembers Geoff

The Isle of Man government has paid tribute to former MHK and MLC Geoff Corkish MBE, who passed away in September.

At the first sitting of Tynwald’s new parliamentary year this morning (Tuesday), President of Tynwald Laurence Skelly led the tributes, reflecting on Mr Corkish’s long-standing commitment to the Manx public .

Mr Skelly said: ‘We will remember Geoff as a member who always worked collegiately and constantly striving for a positive outcome.

‘He was passionate about tourism, education and culture, demonstrating a deep love and cherish for the Isle of Man.’

The court observed a moment of silence in his memory, with Mr Skelly describing him as ‘a truly proud Manx gentleman’.

Mr Corkish was first elected to the House of Keys in 2006, representing Douglas West, and was re-elected in 2011.

In 2013, he was elevated to the Legislative Council, where he continued to serve until his retirement.

During his political career, he held a number of key positions, including Deputy Speaker, Chair of the Isle of Man Arts Council, and board member of the Manx Electricity Authority.

Before entering politics, Mr Corkish was a well-known and respected figure in business, having spent 37 years with the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company, where he served as spokesperson.

Known for his approachable style and trademark humour, he became a recognisable face to generations of islanders.

Outside his professional life, Mr Corkish made an immense contribution to the island’s cultural scene.

A gifted baritone, he won the Cleveland Medal in 1983 and went on to direct the Festival of Choirs, encouraging musical talent across the island.

He also served as Chair of the Isle of Man Arts Council and Vice-Chair of Culture Vannin, working tirelessly to support and promote Manx culture, creativity and tradition.

Following the moment’s silence, members are now working through the 34 questions on the paper. Tynwald is certainly back.
