Gef’s 30 Under 30 Winners: Q&A with Harvey Lowe

How did you start your career or role in the community?

My first professional work experience was with Utmost Wealth Solutions during my secondary school work experience (surprisingly 4 years ago now!), with other experiences at Nedbank Private Wealth and Capital International Group to follow. These experiences shaped my love for finance. I also developed my first business selling beauty products throughout Europe when I was 15 years old.

In one sentence, summarise your journey so far as a young and successful person under 30.

An eye-opening, once-in-a-lifetime experience (quite literally!)

Tell us about your business/industry, is there something interesting about it that most people wouldn’t expect?

Most of our customer relationships happen online through channels like Discord and Twitter. We never get to meet most customers in person, but if we do, they are always different to how you imagine!

Have you experienced any hurdles in your career or community efforts and if so, how did you overcome them?

The biggest hurdle was probably interacting with seniors and experts in my field and demonstrating that although I am young, I know what I am talking about and should be trusted/given responsibility. I believe the best way to do this is to speak professionally and demonstrate your ability through conversation or hard work.

Tell us about why you think you won the category you did?

Innovation is at the core of all of our efforts as a company. Our largest client, Etihad Airways, wanted a technology solution that did new and cool things that no one has done before, such as using your NFT to get business class check-in, lounge access and more. You have to think outside the box constantly!

Who are your role models, either on-island or off, in your sector or outside of it?

My role models are probably those who have always believed in me, and wanted me to always push myself. Not mentioning names but my old team at Capital(!).

Off-island, my biggest role model has to be the startup founders behind Square. Their ability to manage and grow an idea into one of the biggest fintechs around today is incredible.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

I try and live by the phrase of “try and try again, and if you fail, fail fast.” I’ve heard that from many people but it was probably my dad who said it to me first.

What changes do you hope to see in your sector or community in the coming years?

I hope to see a more formal network of startups and investors on the island. This would be the best catalyst to ensure the IOM is always innovating.

What would you say to young people nominating themselves, or people nominating others, for 30 Under 30 in the future?

It’s an amazing opportunity to showcase yourself and meet people you never would.

It’s amazing even to get 30 Under 30, never mind to win the innovation category. Looking forward to the winners’ party!
