Matthew Collister Will Fix Your Clothes AND Your Confidence
When Matthew Collister first picked up a needle and thread, it wasn’t in a glamorous studio or under the watchful eye of a fashion mentor. It was at home, adjusting his school uniform to fit better because nothing off-the-rack ever quite sat right.
What started as a teenage attempt to feel a bit more confident quickly turned into a lifelong love of tailoring, and now, at just 26, Matthew is the founder of Seamlessly You and one of the Gef 2025 30 Under 30 winners in the Innovation category, supported by Zurich Isle of Man.
‘I started my journey as a tailor from a personal need,’ says Matthew. ‘That sparked my creativity with clothing and set me on a path through the world of design.’
Building Skills and Bringing It Home
After studying textiles at high school, he went on to complete a Level 3 Diploma in Art & Design at the Isle of Man College, before heading to London to study Fashion Design at Middlesex University. But instead of chasing big-city dreams, Matthew brought it all back home, determined to change the way people think about clothes, one stitch at a time.
Through his business Seamlessly You, Matthew helps people reconnect with what’s already in their wardrobes. From clever alterations to bold transformations, his work is all about making style personal again, while cutting down on waste in the process. ‘So many people have pieces they love but don’t wear because they don’t quite fit or feel dated. I help them rediscover those pieces and the potential of what they already owned.’
Changing Perceptions of Tailoring
What sets Matthew apart isn’t just his technical skill, but the story he tells through each garment and the message behind his mission. ‘Tailoring is often seen as a traditional or outdated craft, but what many people don’t realise is how modern, creative, and empowering it can be. It’s not just about fixing clothes; it’s about helping people feel more confident.’
One of the biggest hurdles he’s faced is convincing people that tailoring is worth it. ‘Many people don’t see it as relevant or worthwhile compared to simply buying something new. But through my Instagram and business, I share transformations, tell the stories behind each piece, and make the process feel accessible, modern, and exciting. Slowly, that helped build trust and shift perceptions.’
Looking Ahead
His vision for the future includes more education, more creativity and more people picking up the tools of the trade. ‘Tailoring and sewing skills are fading, especially on the island. I want to share the skills and knowledge I’ve gained over the years, and helping others develop their creativity and confidence through hands-on learning. I’m really passionate about it, and I see it as a vital part of my business moving forward.’
He’s also passionate about fair pay and respect for craft. ‘I hope that the value of skilled craftsmanship is more widely recognised and fairly compensated, so that the hard work and expertise involved are truly appreciated and justified. This would help revive the craft and build a stronger, more vibrant community around it.’
Why Stay on the Isle of Man?
For anyone considering returning to or staying on the Isle of Man, Matthew is full of encouragement. ‘The greatest benefit of staying on or moving back to the Isle of Man is how strong and community-driven the island is. When I started Seamlessly You, I didn’t spend a penny on marketing – through the power of social media and the supportive local community, I was able to reach and connect with so many people.’
