Gef’s What’s on Guide: Nu Metal & Nativities

Like a coin in the middle of a dense Christmas pudding, you and I are well into the thick of the festive season. No doubt you have work Christmas dos coming up soon. Unless you’re unemployed. Or self-employed and hate your own company.. and your own company. In either case, allow me to offer these alternatives instead.

Music Lovers:

Mad Jack’s Xmas Special

*Great for people who like axes to go alongside their music.

When: Saturday, 16 December

Where: Mad Jacks. If that wasn’t clear from the subtle title.

Time: 8pm-11:30pm

Rules: 18+ only

You’re being invited to mosh around the Christmas tree. Which sounds like a recipe for pine-needle disaster, if you ask me. System of a Dhoon will be bringing their nu metal anarchy to wreck the halls and they’ll be supported by Marine Drive. The band. Not the road. I checked.

 

Family Friendly:

Groudle Glen Railway – Santa Trains

*Terrible for people who have a phobia of Santa and trains.

When: Saturday, 16 and Sunday, 17 December

Where: Groudle Glen Railway. Another cryptic one.

Time: 10am-3:30pm

Lovely for a family day out. 

 

MWDW Christmas Party Day

*Cute for those of you who loves dolphins. Who doesn’t? Only monsters.

When: Saturday 16, December

Where: 31 Michael Street, Peel

Time: 10am-4pm

Join the MWDW gang at their Visitor Centre for some Christmas cheer, gift buying, mince pies, hot drinks and chit-chat about marine life. There’ll be some kids crafts out if you want to bring the family, or just bring yourselves, have a cuppa with us, catch up with other supporters of MWDW and maybe do a bit of Christmas shopping to help us raise funds. Lovely.

Market Lovers:

Douglas Foodies Market

*There’ll be an ACTUAL DONKEY there. 

When: Saturday, 16 December

Where: North Pole. Sorry. Scratch that. North Quay.

Time: 10am-3pm

The last Douglas Foodies Market of 2023 takes on a festive spirit with the inclusion of local craft stalls and a live nativity procession (including Donkey, which I assume will be eaten when the Nativity finishes), followed by a short nativity reading by Rev’d Dr Michael Brydon of St, Matthews Church. Onchan Silver Band will be playing some Christmas favourites as you browse the stall and there will be carols for all to join in at the end of the nativity.
The nativity parade starts at 12:30 from outside the Old Market Hall on North Quay. So, come all ye faithful, browse, discover, shop, eat, drink and be merry. That’s an order.

 

Creatives:

2121: A Film by Kitterland

*Excellent for lovers of the arts and the number 21.

When: Sunday, 17 December

Where: Erin Arts Centre

Time: 7:30pm

Price: Tickets here.

The 21 May falls on the 21st week of the year. In the course of that week the sun sets at 21 minutes past the 21st hour. Kitterland will screen their film 2121 at the Erin Arts Centre on 17 December. Why not the 21st, you might ask. To which the answer is, I don’t know. But if I had to speculate I’d probably put it down to booking conflictions. Recorded at the Sound Cafe on 21 May, Kitterland’s film takes in views of the island from dawn until dusk, from sea to river, to forest and field.

 

If you’re not going to be at any of these because you’re at or getting ready for your Christmas work do, have a great time. If not, I’ll see you at the Foodies Market. You’ll find me next to the donkey holding a knife and fork.
