Another Year Sails by

The gov says the new ferry terminal in Liverpool won’t be in use before next March.

An update from the gov showed new pics from inside the building, where some of the features and furniture have been installed.

A statement said: ‘Externally, the marine works continue to present challenges due to the testing environment. The pace has, however, been able pick up due to better weather, and more than 70 per cent of the scour protection has now been installed. All marine works are estimated for completion in the autumn.

‘It is envisaged that staff training will get underway in January 2024. Berthing trials will take place for the Manannan in early 2024 ahead of the vessel carrying the terminal’s first passengers at the end of March.’

The Manxman will undertake berthing trials in Liverpool later in 2024.

A White Elephant?

The need for a new terminal came about from Liverpool’s decision to expand its cruise ship offering. However, when it was first mooted, a deal was expected to be done between Peel Ports and the Steam Packet over costs and usage.

However, last month minister Chris Thomas said the DoI, which has handled the project since the Manx gov decided it had to get involved and buy a piece a land in Liverpool instead of allowing Peel Ports and the Steam Packet to resolve the issue between them, wasn’t able to put a figure on the final bill taxpayers will receive for the much maligned project.

The Public Accounts Committee is currently exploring the ferry terminal and the events which to costs spiralling out of control and the taxpayer being handed yet another large bill from a gov project going over budget.
