Three Local Legends Recognised in King’s New Year’s Honours List

The New Year’s Honours List is out, and three Isle of Man legends have been recognised by King Charles III for their outstanding contributions to our island community.

First up, we’ve got Howard Parkin MBE, the Isle of Man’s very own stargazing guru.

If you’ve ever looked up at the Manx night sky and marvelled at the stars, chances are Howard had a hand in making it special. Over nearly 40 years, he’s taught astronomy to adults, led the charge for the island’s Dark Sky Discovery sites, and even helped the Post Office with some stellar stamp designs. Whether he’s giving talks, publishing books, or chatting on Manx Radio, Howard’s passion for astronomy is truly out of this world.

Then there’s Patricia Costain MBE, who’s basically the definition of public service.

Patricia has been a magistrate, Captain of the Parish for Patrick, a Circuit Steward for the Methodist Church, and Chair of the Peel Charity Shop, which has raised over £2 million for smaller Manx charities. She’s spent decades quietly making life better for the elderly, the sick, and anyone who’s needed her help. Calm, conscientious, and utterly committed, Patricia’s impact on the island is immeasurable.

Finally, Gilli Cowley BEM has been recognised for her incredible work with the RNLI.

As Chair of the Douglas Lifeboat Guild for nearly 20 years, she’s helped raise over £1 million for the lifesaving charity and inspired countless others to get involved.

From sell-out events to securing official charity status at big-name galas, Gilli’s efforts have kept the RNLI afloat in more ways than one.

Three brilliant people, each making the island a better place in their own unique way.
