Tip To Stay Open!

The Northern Civic Amenity Site has dodged the chopping block, staying open for at least another year thanks to Ramsey Town Commissioners stepping in to run it for the Department of Infrastructure (DoI).

Last month, RTC had planned to hand the keys back to the DoI by April 30, raising fears of job losses and a bin-based crisis in the north. But now, after some intense behind-the-scenes wrangling, the tip will stay open under a new deal.

The NCAS, which has been caught up in funding drama since 2023, saw Bride Commissioners walk away from its joint funding model earlier this year.

They argued that their ratepayers were being charged up to three times more than others due to an unfair system, and after plenty of back-and-forth (and some accusations of bullying), they officially left the scheme in March.

Now, the DoI has stepped in to steady the ship, confirming: ‘The Isle of Man Government will resume control of the Northern Civic Amenity Site and ensure it remains operational for the next year.’ Ramsey Town Commissioners will operate it on behalf of the government from April 2025.

Infrastructure Minister Dr Michelle Haywood MHK said: ‘I am confident that today’s announcement means the north will continue to be served by the site for the next 12 months.’ She added that talks had been ‘positive’ and that northern local authorities will continue to chip in to keep the place running.

Ramsey Town Commissioners’ Chair Robert Cowell called it a ‘fantastic result,’ thanking local authorities, DoI officers, and especially the staff, who have worked through an uncertain period.

‘I am extremely grateful to the entire northern community for seeing the value of this asset in the north and continuing to fund the site,’ he said.
