Wetherspoon To Arrive On Manx Shores

The Isle of Man is set to get its first Wetherspoon pub, with the UK-based chain confirming its arrival to Gef.

The new venue, The Conister Arms, will take over the former 1886 Bar and Grill on Regent Street in Douglas and is set to open on May 14, 2025.

The move brings Spoon’s well-known low-cost food and drink model to the island, a change that will no doubt have an impact on the local hospitality scene.

While some may welcome the arrival of budget pints and all-day breakfasts, others could be concerned about its effect on existing pubs and restaurants.

Wetherspoon spokesman Eddie Gershon told Gef: ‘We are looking forward to opening a Wetherspoon pub on the Isle of Man.

‘We are confident that the new pub will appeal to a wide range of customers and be an asset to the social scene in Douglas.’

The opening will create new jobs, with existing staff at 1886 expected to transfer to the new operation.

Founded in 1979 by Tim Martin, Wetherspoon operates nearly 900 pubs across the UK and Ireland, often repurposing historic buildings.

Its expansion into the Isle of Man has been the subject of speculation for years, and the opening is expected to generate strong reactions from both supporters and critics.

Whether it proves to be a welcome addition or an unwelcome disruption, The Conister Arms will soon be part of the island’s pub scene.
