First Love Tech event a success

The Island’s first Mother and Daughter Tech Event was held last month at the new Microgaming Campus in Douglas.The free event was organised by a collective of local businesswomen, formed by Claire Milne, Partner at Appleby. Taking inspiration from the global ‘Girls In Tech’, Claire wanted to launch a similar movement in the Isle of Man.“A mother and daughter event was an obvious choice for our first event,” commented Claire. “Bringing together young girls with their mothers and female carers was so exciting and lovely to watch. Trying to get females to embrace technology and consider careers in tech at any age is what we want to do.”The primary objective of the initiative is to encourage females to embrace science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), to educate them on the ever increasing list of career and training paths that are available to them and to debunk the myths and perceptions that these kinds of jobs are for males only.Continent 8 sponsored the event, and provided Sphero Balls for all of the attendees. Sphero Balls are app-enabled robotic balls that the young girls controlled and manoeuvred around obstacle courses.Roberta Castle, Account Director for Continent 8 was thrilled with the event. “It was brilliant to see the girls having fun while controlling the mini robots, the parents got involved helping their daughters to understand the technology.
