Jeriel Bacani: “There are tons of opportunities on the IOM…”

Jeriel Bacani is the Creative Content Lead within Microgaming’s marketing team and a recipient of Gef’s 30 Under 30 accolade.  This is just another award under Jeriel’s proverbial belt, having been nominated for (and subsequently won) The 2018 Women In Gaming Award in the Hidden Talent category. 

Having started her career at Microgaming, Jeriel is now responsible for everything that leaves the company, from creative visuals to social media content. Social diversity is a hot topic on a global scale, especially within the tech industry which has been traditionally viewed as a predominantly male sector. But Jeriel attributes the Island’s progressive mindset to the abolishment of such barriers and encouraging diversity of talent and diversity of thought.Having studied Politics and International Relations at Lancaster University for three years, she was initially skeptical about returning to the Island, having a preconceived idea surrounding the limitations of career development and progression on the Isle of Man, a baseless notion by her own admission.”There are tons of opportunities on the Isle of Man right now, particularly in areas like eGaming and Finance,” explains Jeriel.  “What we can do more of is to endorse that to young people who are thinking of coming back to the Island.”My advice to anyone who would like to enter the [eGaming] industry is to just go for it. There’s a lot of transferrable skills they’re looking for, so even if you studied in politics or marketing, there’s a lot of roles that your skills and talents can cater to.”I think that graduates who are looking into this industry shouldn’t be afraid to approach someone within eGaming and ask them for some advice. You don’t have to be in technical roles or specialise in anything, as it’s an industry where you have to be open to learning new things because there are so many roles you can go into.”Having been born in the bustling metropolis of Manila in the Philippines, Jeriel’s parents relocated to the Isle of Man without knowing too much about its culture. “I love the peace and quiet of the Isle of Man: it is unmeasurable and incomparable to anywhere that I’ve been.”This is just a sanctuary.
