30 Under 30 previous winners: ‘I was humbled to be recognised’

Since the last #Gef30Under30 we’ve watched our previous winners continue to grow and evolve in their careers and communities.

Alex Wilson talked to Gef about how her life has changed in the five years since being named one of the island’s 30 Under 30.

Gef: What did being recognised as one of Gef’s 30 Under 30 mean to you?

Alex Wilson: I was humbled to be recognised alongside a diverse group of interesting and inspiring individuals – the programme really did highlight the broad range of opportunities the island can afford its young people when seized with both hands.

My nomination was largely in recognition of my contributions to various roles I’ve held in my career – it was a nice acknowledgement and encouraged me to continue to shape a career around my passion for people, which I’ve continued to do.

Gef: How have you grown since you were named one of the winners in 2018?
Alex Wilson: Since 2018, I’ve landed a dream job at Microgaming as Head of Customer Operations. I founded a company with long-term friend and colleague Katie Nicholson, set up to support startup founders and the island’s entrepreneurial ecosystem, which has grown in size and strength thanks to the support of Startup Grind, local sponsors, partners and event supporters.

Now a few years into my thirties, I can hand on heart say 30 is as much fun as 20 – more even. I am more settled personally and professionally. Experience brings confidence, contentedness and a widened network you can lean on.

Gef: What advice would you give to young leaders who are just getting started in their careers?
Alex Wilson: Do not underestimate the power of your network. Invest time in building a band of people around you who inspire, advise and assist. Remember it’s a two-way street, what you put in pays out in the end, or I like to think so.

Don’t consider your age against you – too often I have been silent or dismissed my opinions in a room of elders. Speak out.

Nominations for our new list of young leaders closes on April 6 and only thirty names will make the final cut, enter now at 30Under30.im.
