The fire service is asking people to ensure their chimneys are well swept, after a number of fires over the last day or so.

Admittedly we could’ve just shared this on Facebook, but now you’re all going to have Mary Poppins stuck in your head all day and you’ll be thinking about fire safety, we should really get medals.

Tp help prevent your chim chim-in-ey catching fire, the fire service recommends the following:

– Ensure a fire guard is in front of the fire at all times.
– Extinguish the fire before going to bed or leaving the house.
– Never use petrol or paraffin to light your fire.
– Keep chimneys and flues clean and well maintained.

A clean chimney can help prevent fires and structure damage to your property. Chimneys should be swept:

Oil – once a year.
Gas – once a year.
Bituminious coal – twice a year.
Wood – up to four times a year.
Smokeless coals – at least once a year.

Also, if you’re installing a wood burner, use an approved installer and be mindful that you must comply with Planning and Building Regulations. Cheerio!
