Continue The New Year Singing Loud For All To Hear

Published

on

We all know January is one of the darkest months of the year. Literally and metaphorically. The nights are cold and haunted by ghosts of Christmas just passed. But not the one from the book. Household surfaces look cruelly bare and the halls that were once decked are now eerily quiet, void of feel-good music. But there is one way to bring the festive spirit into the new year without leaving your decorations up. (Tacky). And that is through the gift of song.

The Isle of Man Government staff choir – now newly renamed The Isle of Man Arts Council Community Choir – is looking for new members and it’s open to ANYONE who enjoys singing.

Originally founded by the Arts Council in 2016 for Government employees, the choir is led by musical director Dr Mandy Griffin and accompanist David Holland and now performs at concerts and the Manx Music Festival each year.

Jane Corkill, Arts Development Manager said:

“It has been proved that singing can help us all in our busy lives. It is a natural anti-depressant and can strengthen the immune system, help with sleep, lower stress levels and improve mental alertness. Our choir is an open opportunity to break away in the working day to enjoy music and singing with likeminded people who soon become friends, and we are welcoming anyone to join us.”

Rehearsals are every Wednesday at St George’s Church from 1:10pm to 1:50pm. For more information, drop Zoe Shuttleworth, Arts Administrator an email: Zoe.Shuttleworth@gov.im or by phone: 01624 694596.

The choir is free, informal and involves a wide variety of music, from classical to pop, musical theatre to jazz, from Mozart to the Beatles – I honestly don’t know how you could find fault with any of that. I will happily sing its praises to you until you take your fantastic vibrato from the shower to the choir.
