Douglas Fire Station Hosting Women-Only Try It Night

Ever fancied pulling on the helmet and boots and seeing if you’ve got what it takes?

The Isle of Man Fire and Rescue Service is hosting a Female Firefighter ‘Come and Try It’ session on Wednesday, and it’s your chance to step inside the world of retained firefighting.

As part of its current recruitment campaign, female firefighters from across the island will be at Douglas Fire Station from 6.15pm to 8pm on Wednesday, February 25 to answer questions and give a hands-on insight into the role.

Attendees will be able to chat to serving firefighters about what the job is really like, from protecting the community to balancing call-outs with everyday life.

You’ll also get the opportunity to try some of the physical assessments used during the recruitment process, so there’ll be no surprises later down the line.

The service says there are a range of contracts available, with all training provided on-island.

Retained firefighting can suit people looking for a second job or a part-time role in their local area, offering the chance to serve the community while fitting around other work and family commitments.

And before you panic, you don’t need to turn up in full gym mode. Organisers simply ask that you wear clothing suitable for physical exercise, with arms and legs covered.

The Isle of Man Fire and Rescue Service hopes the event will encourage more women to consider joining the ranks and show that firefighting is a role open to anyone with the commitment, teamwork and determination to do it.
