Fake Cop Calls Warning
The callers are claiming to have arrested someone known to the respondent
Islanders have been warned to be vigilant after reports of phone calls from scammers pretending to be police officers.
The Office of Cyber Security and Information Assurance has issued a warning that scammers are calling, pretending to be from a UK police station.
The callers are claiming to have arrested someone known to the respondent who has made a false charge on their card.
OCSIA said: ‘They [the are advised of a charge to a card and that they should call the number on the back of a debit or credit card (they will hold the line open so respondents are not connected to their bank) or hold the line to be directly connected. Once connected, the scammers will claim to be from a bank and ask for further details.’
The number is spoofed to replicate a legitimate police phone number from a station in the UK.
If you get one of these calls, OCSIA tells people to just hang up and don’t engage with them.
