Former MHK Passes Away

Leonard Singer, who served as both an MHK and an MLC, has died at the age of 80.

A pharmacist by trade, Mr Singer was born in Manchester and upon moving to the island became a well respected figure in the political and business community while representing the people of Ramsey since the early 1990s.
As a prominent member of the island’s jewish community, Mr Singer played a key role in organising events for Holocaust Memorial Day and encouraged the education of children of all faiths and beliefs and to stand up to injustice and prejudice in all of their forms.
Having previously been chair of the local authority in 1995/1996, having been elected in 1991, he moved on to represent the constituency in the House of Keys after the 1996 election.
Mr Singer was later elevated to LegCo before standing down to stand in a Keys election over a cut in services at Ramsey Cottage Hospital.
Returning to the Town Commissioners, he was elected in 2008 and 2011 before ousting Treasury Minister Anne Craine in the 2011 general election and return to the Keys.
Chairman of Ramsey Town Commissioners Alby Oldham said: ‘Leonard was an enthusiastic and dedicated member of Board who had played an active role in politics for over 50 years including three terms at Ramsey Town Commissioners where he was Chairman in the year 1995/1996.
‘On behalf of the Board of Ramsey Town Commissioners I would like to extend my deepest sympathies to Leonard’s family and friends.’
