Gef’s What’s On Guide: Get Hot & Wet This Weekend

Hello my friend, and welcome to the end of yet another week. The sentence ‘I can’t believe January is over, how has THAT happened?!’ has been exclaimed more times than the Laxey wheel has turned.

To celebrate the end of January and the start of the month of love, here’s a few things to get you started.

Douglas Foodies Market

*Good for people who like to eat food.

When: Saturday, 3 February

Where: North Quay, Douglas

Time: 10am-3pm

Douglas Foodies Market is a fortnightly food and street food market. Its ambition: To conquer your food shopping habits. Like a delicious dictator. While milling around the market, you can taste before you buy, discover specialist retailers, and buy Manx produce. All while being entertained by street performers. I heard rumours they’ve got a medieval jester and a bear.

Mug Painting Workshop

*Don’t drink out of it while the paint’s still wet.

When: Saturday, 3 February

Where: The Children’s Centre

Time: 6pm

Rules: Over 16s only – Under 18s must be accompanied by an adult.

This is prime opportunity to do/make something cute for Valentines Day. Even if your painting is as bad as a 3-year-old’s it won’t matter because you can’t stick a mug on the fridge. But you can stick in at the back of the cupboard if it’s rubbish.

Included in the workshop:

1 ceramic mug, paint, refreshments and you’re welcome to bring your own booze!
All funds raised from the workshop go directly to the Children’s Centre charity. So you can do something fun and lovely that even includes booze AND know you’ve done a good deed. What’s not to love here?

Marine Drive’s Early Valentines Moshpit

*Again. Not the road. I double checked.

When: Friday, 2 February

Where: The Original Quids Inn

Time: 8pm-Midnight

If you’re feeling lonesome this valentines day and want to feel the sweaty intimacy of another human body, a good moshpit could scratch that itch.

Friday Folk Night

*Perfect if you can’t get enough of FREE folk nights.

When: Friday, 2 February

Where: Peel Centenary Centre

Time: 8pm-10pm

It’s in Peel and it’s free. Which I’m sure is music to your ears. But not as good as the music Ruby Biscoe Taylor and Matt Kelly will be bringing to your ears.

Wild Waterfall Wonders

*Do go chasing waterfalls.

When: Sunday, 4 February

Where: Sulby Glen

Time: 2pm-5pm

Need to blow away the cobwebs from boozey mug painting and moshpitting? Some cold water therapy will sort you right out. There’s a short walk following by an optional little dip in a pool or waterfall. Towels and wetsuit socks can be provided. Bring a flask of soup along or a hot toddy. No one will be able to see through your flask so won’t be able to tell. Until you start talking to a fence thinking it’s your mate Brian who’s come along with you.
