IOM Prisoners To Record Bedtime Stories
Free scheme helps prisoners stay connected with their children
The Isle of Man Prison isn’t a place short of stories and more tales are set to be told, here’s a nice one for you.
Prisoners will now be able to record bedtime stories for their children thanks to the IOM Prison signing up to the Storybook Dads and Storybook Mums scheme.
Originally starting in 2002 in HMP Dartmoor, the free programme is now run in more than 100 prisons, helping children and parents stay connected.
How it works is prisoners record themselves reading a bedtime story using equipment and books purchased by Isle of Man Prison. The recording is then sent to the Storybook HQ where a team of trained prisoners edit and produce it onto a CD. This is then posted back to the Island for the prisoner to give to their child.
Prisoners are supported through the recording process and assisted reading sessions are provided for less confident readers so they can connect meaningfully with their young ones from afar.
