Isle of Man to Mark Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day

Remembrance Sunday takes place this weekend, with services and wreath-laying ceremonies happening across the island to honour those who lost their lives in conflict.

A two-minute silence will be observed at 11am on Sunday, November 9, and again on Tuesday, November 11, for Armistice Day.

In Douglas, a parade will set off from Market Hill at 9.20am before a service at St Thomas’ Church at 10am, led by Reverend Liz Hull.

The parade will then march to the War Memorial on the Promenade for the 11am silence and wreath-laying.

A short ceremony will also take place there on Armistice Day, with Harris Promenade closed from 10.45am to 11.30am.

The National Service of Remembrance will be held at St John’s at 3pm, attended by the Lieutenant Governor Sir John Lorimer, President of Tynwald Laurence Skelly, and Chief Minister Alfred Cannan. Wreaths will be laid at the National War Memorial following the service.

In Marown, a remembrance service will take place at Marown Parish Church from 10.45am on Sunday.

Port Erin will host a wreath-laying ceremony at the Memorial Hall Garden of the British Legion Hall at 10am, followed by a parade at 10.15am to Rushen Parish Church for the act of remembrance at 10.45am.

Castletown will mark the occasion with a series of events, including the Castletown Poppy Concert at Victoria Road Primary School on Friday, November 7, starting at 7pm. On Sunday, a service of remembrance will be held at Arbory Street Methodist Church at 10am, followed by the act of remembrance at the War Memorial in Market Square at 11am.

A further ceremony will take place there on Armistice Day at 11am.

In Ramsey, the Annual Civic Service of Remembrance will be held at the War Memorial in the Courthouse Grounds at 10.50am on Sunday, followed by the Royal British Legion Service of Remembrance at St Paul’s Church, Market Square, at 6.30pm.

On Armistice Day, the sounding of maroons will mark the start and end of the two-minute silence at 11am.
