Less Queueing, More Clicking

Good news for Isle of Man drivers who’d rather click than queue, the DoI has expanded its range of online services, making it easier to sort vehicle and driving licence paperwork from the comfort of your sofa.

As part of its ongoing digital transformation, the department has rolled out several new services through the Government’s online portal, services.gov.im.

The aim is simple, greater convenience for motorists and less time spent waiting in line.

Drivers can now pay vehicle tax online, with the service expanded so everyone can use it.

Other newly available services include changing personal details, upgrading from a provisional driving licence to a full one, and requesting duplicate documents such as a vehicle registration certificate or tax disc.

There’s also a brand-new user dashboard, designed to help logged-in users access Drivers and Vehicles services more easily and keep everything in one place.

These improvements mean many key tasks can now be completed at home, saving time and avoiding waiting (Gef hates waiting).

Drivers were already able to renew full or provisional driving licences online or request duplicates, and even more services are planned for the coming months.

Nicola Hodson, of the Department of Infrastructure, said customer convenience was a priority for the team. ‘Customer convenience and service is really important to everybody in our team, and by expanding our online services, it is now easier than ever to manage your vehicle and driving documentation at home’, she said.

She added that helpful ‘how to’ video tutorials are on the way and that feedback is welcomed, noting that comments from early users have already helped improve the new services.

The changes form part of government’s wider Efficiencies and Change Programme, which aims to make public services simpler, faster and more cost-effective.

So what’s coming next?

Later this year, more online options are expected to launch, including transferring a vehicle between private individuals, registering a new vehicle, dealer registrations, transferring registration numbers (including cherished plates), and applying to scrap, export or write off a vehicle.

And are you worried about going digital? You don’t need to be!

Paper forms will still be available, and services can still be completed in person or by post.

Video guides are being created for those who need extra help, and assistance is also available by calling the Vehicle Test Centre on 686843.

You don’t need to create an online account to use the services, but registering gives access to the new dashboard. Any personal data will be processed in line with GDPR rules and used only for its intended purpose.

And if paying online isn’t for you, traditional payment methods will remain available too.

In short: fewer forms, fewer queues, and a bit more time back in your day, which Gef reckons is a win.
