A planning application to convert the former Caley’s Stores in Sulby into a house would also see a suitable memorial to its former owner.
Raymond Caley, a stalwart of the community and shop owner died in 2017, since his death, the store was run by Graham Garrett and his wife, and later sold after it closed in 2020.
In the application, submitted by Maple Homes, the building would be retained and extended to form a four bedroom, two-storey, house, with a garage.
The applicant, Gareth Roberts, said the plans intend to ‘make best practical use of an existing redundant building’.
He added: ‘It is also our aim to design a building that sits harmoniously within its surroundings, and in response to Lezayre Commissioners request that they would like to see a planning application that would include a sympathetic improvement to the shop to provide living accommodation.
‘We have also had discussions with Lezayre Commissioners as Raymond Caley was a stalwart of the local community and provided a much appreciated service to the residents of Sulby for many years, that a physical memory of this should be constructed on the site.’
Given its location on the TT course, the store had proved popular with TT fans and riders alike. When it was open, the walls were adorned with pictures of famous stars such as John McGuinness popping in.
