School Gives Pupils a Voice

Laxey School has been recognised for the work of their Pupil Council and the emphasis the school gives to developing the “pupil voice”.

The Investing in Children Award recognises and celebrates examples of imaginative and inclusive practice with children and young people.

At Laxey School the pupil council met with the award assessor and talked through the projects and initiatives they have led on. The children also had to present a range of evidence to support the application including minutes from their meetings and examples of their ideas which have come to fruition.

Beatrice Walker, aged 11, and a member of the Pupil Council said: ‘All the children at Laxey School try their best to make the school a friendly and happy place. The Council tries very hard to include everyone’s ideas as much as possible.’

There are currently over 500 schools and organisations across the UK and Ireland with Investing in Children status. Last year, Dhoon School, which shares its headteacher with Laxey, was awarded Gold Membership in recognition of its longstanding commitment to the programme.

Executive Headteacher Max Kelly said: ‘I am delighted that Laxey School has been recognised for the strong work it does with regards to making sure our pupils are included in decision making. Laxey School is proud of the children and this achievement belongs to them.’

Teacher Sam Bowden who helps support the Pupil Council added: ‘I’m really proud of our Pupil Council and it’s been a privilege to watch them grow and develop as young leaders.’
