P50 Fetches Massive Price Down Under

One of Peel’s most famous exports has just made a huge impression on the other side of the world, despite being small enough to fit in a lift.

A genuine Peel P50, the world’s tiniest production car (and possibly the cutest), has sold at auction in Queensland, Australia, for a record-breaking $85,000 AUD, that’s over £60,000.

Not bad for a vehicle that looks like it was designed to carry half a person.

According to 9 News Australia, the miniature motor was discovered tucked away in a garage before going under the hammer.

The Peel P50, famously built right here in Peel during the swinging 1960s, has long held cult status.

Only 49 were ever sold, and it shot back to fame thanks to Top Gear in 2007, where Jeremy Clarkson hillariously squeezed himself inside and drove it around the BBC offices.

Originally built by the Peel Engineering Company on Mill Road, the tiny three-wheeler was part of a bold era for Manx innovation.

The company, which also made fibreglass boats, hovercrafts, and motorcycle fairings, employed around 40 people at its peak and produced the P50 in a range of stylish colours, including Daytona White, Dragon Red, Capri Blue and Sunshine Yellow.

It might have been small, but it made big waves, earning a spot in the 2010 Guinness World Records as the smallest production car ever made.

So while modern motors keep getting bulkier, it’s nice to know that a piece of true Manx engineering, born beside Peel harbour, still turns heads, wallets, and probably a few tight corners, more than 60 years later.
