Chippy is Ready for Plastic Ban

The owner of a chippy in Onchan has said he is ready for the law coming into force tomorrow banning single use plastic.

Johnny McDowell has been running the chippy since early 2022.

Ever since he opened the chippy opened, Johnny has used biodegradable products to serve takeaway food, making the transition not seamless but relatively simple.

He told Gef: ‘From when we first opened I’ve used roughly 90% of packaging for take away. The majority of chip trays, burger boxes are a product called Vegware.’

However, while the chippy has been ready for this change, the one area that has proved more difficult is bags.

Johnny explained that paper bags aren’t ideal for hot food and if it’s raining they can easily rip and while the biodegradable ones the business has used in the past would be allowed in the UK, he said they won’t be here.

As a result, Johnny has told his customers that he’ll have bags for life available, but they will have to pay for them, or they can bring their own.

For those who do buy them, Johnny said that for every bag the chippy sells it is going to make a contribution to Craig’s Heartstrong Foundation.
