Humpback Spotted in Manx Waters

A passenger travelling on the Manannan has photographed only the second confirmed sighting of a humpback whale in Manx waters in six years.

Manx Whale and Dolphin Watch shared the somewhat grainy picture on Facebook

Sam Glennie was travelling onboard the Manannan to Liverpool on Monday afternoon when, around six miles outside of Douglas, they spotted the whale.

‘I first noticed it’s large blows, which it did regularly, and I found this strange as I have never seen a Minke whale blow before, nevermind as much as this,’ Sam said.

MWDW added: ‘Luckily, Sam caught this image which shows the small dorsal fin, and triangular shaped arch they make before diving, alongside a bushy blow.

‘This sighting follows the first confirmed humpback in six years on July 11, and a further suspected humpback which was reported on August 8 10 miles west of Peel. These may not be different whales, it could be the same one hanging about offshore.’
