King Cav Breaks Tour Record

Mark Cavendish has etched his name into the history books after winning a record-breaking 35th stage at the Tour de France this afternoon.

Sir Cav took victory in a sprint finish on today’s fifth stage from Saint Jean De Maurienne to Saint Vulbas.

In the closing moments of the race, as it entered its final sprint, the Manx Missile rolled back the years by moving to the left side of the road and defeating his rival in a straight sprint finish.

At one point he looked boxed in, but to rule him out you’d have to be a fool!

Cav is competing in his last Le Tour, having delayed retirement by a year in order to attempt an historic win which would move him clear of the legendary Eddy Merckx on 34 wins. 

Riding for Astana Qazaqstan, Cav had targeted Monday’s third stage as a possible chance for a sprint victory after an extremely tough opening couple of days. 

But a dramatic crash ended the Manxman’s hopes of contesting the bunch sprint. 

However today, the twice green jersey winner made history.
