Everyone loves a good book, but why sit at home and read when we live in one of the most naturally beautiful islands in the world? Ruth Nathan shares some of her favourite beauty spots in the west to got lost in a book.

Back of the Castle

No one can deny one of the most peaceful reading spots on the West side is around the back of Peel Castle. If you cherish an evening watching a sunset in the one and only Sunset City while digging into a Coleen Hoover novel, then this is your spot. Why not open a bottle of prosecco and pour a glass and a half in a takeaway cup? Listen to the waves rise and fall against the rocks and maybe even catch a sighting of a seal or a pod of dolphins. 

The Arboretum

There are many spots to sit and enjoy a read in this 25-acre park. A firm favourite is on a bench beside the cherry blossom. In Japan, the cherry blossom is said to symbolise beauty and mortality – we experience the beautiful bloom each April but we are reminded that life is momentary as the petals begin to fall. So as you watch the grass become scattered with pink, read an inspirational book to remind you that life is a gift. A recommendation:  “The Tattooist of Auschwitz” by Heather Norris – a hard-hitting read that shows us love can thrive even in the darkest of places. 

Glen Maye Beach

If you fancy a longer scenic coastal walk you can get to Glen Maye Beach from Corrin’s Hill along the Raad Ny Foillan route. If not,  park up and stroll past the trees and crashing waterfall. When you get down to the beach consider dipping your toes in the sea or completely submerging yourself. Feel a sense of clarity as you begin to notice the only thing you’re focusing on is the cold waves crashing against you. After feeling like Wim Hoff, perch on a rock and take out the book you’ve always said you wanted to read but never got around to it. Can you hear that? No, me either…that’s the sound of silence. 

Corrin’s Hill 

Obviously, there are many benches on Corrin’s Hill to read but on a glorious summer’s day, the best one of all is at the back beside the statues of the man and woman. Begin your adventure by trekking up and over the hill – not forgetting to touch the tower – and plonk yourself down beside the couple. You may even have more company with sheep nearby. Before opening your novel, take in a few deep breaths and feel gratefulness wash over you as you look out at the picturesque scenery of Niarbyl. 

Glen Helen 

First, enjoy a stroll around the wooden valleys. Glen Helen is home to a variety of majestic trees including, Sycamore, Oak and Douglas Fir. Explore where the fairies live and even play ‘knockie’ on the little creature’s door. Take a pew on the stone throne and don’t forget to make a wish. Who else loves the fresh smells of moss and lush greenery? There isn’t a more magical place to delve into a fantasy book whilst listening to the ambience of water cascading among the rocks.
